Simplicity and reliability

“Simplicity is prerequisite for reliability.”

Edsger W. Dijkstra

Why it stays with me

Dijkstra was a computer scientist, and he meant this about software, but it applies to almost anything people build. Every extra part is another thing that can fail, and another thing someone has to understand.

The hard part is that simplicity is rarely the first draft. The first version of most things is complicated because I don’t yet understand the problem. Simplicity comes from understanding it better and removing what isn’t needed.

This site is a small test of the idea. Plain text files, a simple structure, and as few moving parts as possible, so it keeps working while I focus on what goes into it.

Ayoub Khallok keeps this archive of essays, research, lessons and notes, written to understand things more clearly. More about Ayoub.
