In the light of evolution

“Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.”
Why it stays with me
This is the title of a 1973 essay by the geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky, and it has become one of the best-known sentences in biology.
His point is that evolution isn’t one topic among many. It is the framework that connects all the others, from why cells share the same genetic code to why animals that look different have similar bones.
I like it because it describes what a great theory does: it turns a long list of facts into one story. That’s the kind of understanding I’m always looking for.
