Comprehensible and pointless

“The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless.”
Why it stays with me
This is one of the most quoted and most debated lines in popular science. It comes near the end of The First Three Minutes, after Weinberg has described the early universe in remarkable detail.
It’s easy to read it as bleak. But Weinberg follows it straight away with the thought that the effort to understand the universe is one of the few things that lifts human life above farce.
I read it as a challenge. If the universe doesn’t hand us a purpose, then meaning is something we make, and trying to understand where we are is a good place to start.
