Survival machines

“We are survival machines, robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes.”
Why it stays with me
This line from the preface to The Selfish Gene is meant to shock, and it does. In the same passage, Dawkins calls it a truth that still fills him with astonishment.
It’s important to read it as a description of how evolution works, not as a statement about how we should live. Dawkins himself argues that we are the one species that can rebel against our genes.
What I take from it is the value of a strange point of view. Looking at life as genes building bodies to carry them forward makes many puzzles in biology suddenly make sense.
