To be understood

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

Attributed to Marie Curie

Why it stays with me

This line is widely attributed to Marie Curie, but I haven’t been able to trace it to a source in her own writing, so I keep it marked as an attribution.

Whoever first said it, the idea fits her life. Curie worked with radioactivity when almost nothing was known about it, and the dangers were only understood later, partly through what happened to her. Understanding was not free.

What I take from it is that fear often comes from not knowing. A storm, an illness or a new technology becomes less frightening once you understand how it works, even when the risk is still real. Understanding doesn’t remove danger, but it lets you face it clearly.

Ayoub Khallok keeps this archive of essays, research, lessons and notes, written to understand things more clearly. More about Ayoub.
